William Porcher Miles letters, 1858.

A photocopy of a letter (1856 November 8) from Miles in Charleston (S.C.) to [Robert D. Shindler] concerns the transience of "popular favor," a professorship, an election, and Shindler's book and mathematical research. In a letter (1858 August 18) from Charleston (S.C.) to B.F. DeBow Miles relates that he will write on DeBow's behalf about a vacancy in Mr. [T]oncey's department; there is also mention of the death of General Quitman (John Anthony Quitman, 1798-1858).
